Pet Transport to Russia: Health, Crate, and Vaccination Guidelines

Russia comes under the largest area zone, spanning Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. Pet transport to Russia requires lots of planning, especially given the country’s specific regulations and requirements.

The pets’ treatments in Russia

Although Russia allows pets like cats and dogs, it generally treats them well if the documents and vaccination record are properly submitted to customs. The pets are popular in Russia, especially in cities like Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kazan. Russians are very, very affectionate towards the imported pets if they come in a legal way.

Health certificate: The important pillar of the pet transport to Russia.

For the pets that are relocating to Russia, we must submit a valid health certificate. The health certificate must be evaluated by the official veterinarian doctor from the country of origin of the pets. The key requirements are

The certificate that declares that the pet is fit to travel and healthy. The documents include the species, breed, gender, age, microchip or tattoo identification numbers, vaccination record, and owner’s name and contact details.

Validity: The vaccination must be issued within 5 to 30 days before arrival in Russia. For most of the European Union countries, the Form 5A or the ANNEX IV is required and must be endorsed by the official veterinarian of the country where the pets come from.

Although we enter Russia, we should also present the import permits in some cases for commercial purposes. Pets traveling with their owners do not require import permits.

Vaccination for the pet transport to Russia

All pets must be vaccinated against rabies; it is non-negotiable.

Rabies vaccination rule:

The vaccination must be given one month before entering Russia but not older than one year; it will depend on the validity of the vaccination. Pets under three months cannot be vaccinated.

The additional vaccination

The additional vaccinations are not mandatory in Russian law but are always advised for the pet’s safety.

For Dogs: Distemper, leptospirosis, adenovirus.

For the cats: feline panleukopenia, calicivirus.

Microchipping Rules and Guidelines

The microchip identification is not mandatory by law, but for the safety of the pets, microchipping is important. The microchip should meet the ISO standard of a 15-digit non-encrypted code. The chip number should be included in both health certificates and vaccination records. If the pets are chipped with a non-ISO standard, then the owner should carry the portable scanner, or the pet must be rechipped with the ISO standard.

Crate requirements for pet transport to Russia

The crate must be large enough for pets to get up and spin around and lie comfortably. The crate should be made of strong, durable plastic or fiberglass.

The carrier is designed in such a way that it is ventilated on three sides; some airlines also mandate four sides. The door of the carrier should be secure with good, durable locks or latches. The crate should be labeled with “Live animal” and feeding instructions if required. It should include absorbent bedding and water and food bowls, which can be accessible from outside for the pets to keep full and hydrated during the time of travel.

Quarantine rules for Pet transport to Russia

One of the best rules for the pets entering Russia is that the pets do not have quarantine rules as long as the pets have the proper documentation.

However, the quarantine rules apply when the pets show illness and lack documents like a health certificate or vaccination record. If the vaccination is out of date, then the quarantine applies. The pets are entering from the high-risk rabies area.

If the pets cannot comply with these terms, the pets are refused entry, or they are sent back at the owner’s expense.

Customs check at the Russian airports

Pet owners should present the original health certificate, rabies vaccination records, microchip identification (if available), and proof of ownership (pet passport). Last but not least, the pet import documents.
